AEOLUS4FUTURE – call for two ESR positions

The Inter-University Research Centre for Building Aerodynamics and Wind Engineering (CRIACIV) at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) of the University of Florence has two vacancies for Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in the framework of the project AEOLUS4FUTURE “Efficient harvesting of the wind energy” (Horizon 2020 MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS - Innovative Training Networks - Call: H2020-MSCA-ITN-2014).

ESR 4 - Project Title: Advanced numerical simulations of offshore wind turbines.

The ESR will work in the field of hydro-aero-elastic simulations of offshore wind turbines, with particular emphasis on the numerical modeling of nonlinear waves loading and associated dynamic response of large wind turbines.

ESR 5 - Project Title: Wind tunnel analysis on conventional small VAWT & Design of an innovative small VAWT optimized for urban flows.

The ESR will assess and analyze the efficiency of different types of small VAWTs with different geometric characteristic parameters in nonconventional flows in order to optimize the WT rotor for complex urban flows.

1.Academic qualifications and profile required

Eligible candidates to research positions are Early‐stage Researchers (ESRs). That is, candidates who are in the first four years (full‐time equivalent) of their research careers at the date of recruitment by the host institution (July 1st 2015 tentative date). This is counted from the date when they obtained the degree (Diploma/MSc) which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.

Candidates can be of any nationality, but should not have performed more than 12 months of work or study in the country of the appointment (Italy) in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date.

The candidate should not yet have obtained a doctoral degree. The ESR will have the opportunity to be enrolled in the international PhD Course in “Civil and Environmental Engineering” (http://www.ddicea.unifi.it/mdswitch.html).

The candidates are expected to evidence outstanding performance in the previous studies and are required to be fluent in English (both spoken and written).

Preference factors are the evidence of ability and initiative to develop research and write scientific publications and experience of participation in research projects.

2.Legislation and regulations

The grant contract is ruled by the Grant Agreement. The ESR contracts are for maximum 36 months. Contracts are expected to start on July 1st 2015 (in any case at latest by September 1st 2015).

The PhD program the ESRs will be enrolled in typically starts on November and will last 36 months. The final defense of the PhD Thesis is expected within the year 2018. Any costs from the end of the ESRs contract to the date of final examination for the PhD title will not be covered by the Project.

3.Location

The work is to be conducted at the CRIACIV/DICEA of the University of Florence with secondments in European countries in agreement with the Project and the PhD program. For this reason candidate should have a proper visa.

4.Remuneration

The remuneration will be in line with the EC rules for Marie Curie grant holders and consists of a salary augmented by a net mobility allowance. For further information please check the section “Financial Aspects” from Marie Curie ITN actions work program, available at the following link:

5.Selection method

The ranking of candidates will be based on the evaluation of their curriculum vitae, motivation letter, copies of publications representative of previous studies (typically Master Thesis) and research (typically papers in scientific journals: no more than 5 publications can be attached). Candidates can provide up to two reference letters from academic referees who can be contacted by the selection committee for recommendations. These letters will be factors of preference.

Pre‐selected candidates will be interviewed individually (physically or via skype) in order to complete the selection process.

6.Selection Committee

Prof. Claudio Borri, Prof. Gianni Bartoli, Dr. Enzo Marino

7.Notification of results

Candidate will be notified by email.

8.Application submission

Deadline for submission of applications is 19th April 2015. The deadline can be extended in case the positions are not filled.

Submissions are made by e-mail mentioning in the subject “AEOLUS4FUTURE application”. The e-mail must specify the ESR position the ESR is applying for and must include the following attachments:

  1. Curriculum vitae.

  2. PDF copies of the selected (max 5) publications zipped in a single file.

  3. Motivation letter.

  4. Up to two letters of recommendation (optional), zipped in a single file.

The applications must be submitted by email to: aeolus4future@dicea.unifi.it

Selection results

The selected candidates are:

-          Ms. Agota Mockutė for position ESR4.

-          Mr. Sven Zimmermann for position ESR5.
