Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) at the University of Florence brings together expertise dedicated to the study, design and management of the built environment and the landscape. Its activities range from structural engineering to geotechnics, from hydraulics to water resource management, and extend to infrastructure, transport, geomatics, sanitary and environmental engineering, technical architecture and urban planning. These diverse fields are united by a focus on safety and sustainability.

The DICEA carries out teaching and research activities, covering both basic and applied fields. The academic programme includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as an international PhD programme in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The degree programmes combine scientific knowledge with design and laboratory experience. Research focuses, amongst other topics, on adaptation to climate change, risk prevention, sustainable cities, the circular economy, innovative materials and heritage conservation, making extensive use of numerical modelling, geospatial data, sensor technology and artificial intelligence.

Laboratories, research units and centres enable different areas of expertise to be brought together and solutions to be developed for real-world problems. The Department collaborates with universities, businesses, organisations and institutions, both in Italy and abroad, and promotes technology transfer and dialogue with society. The aim is to train professionals and researchers capable of tackling change and contributing, in line with the 2030 Agenda, to building safer, more inclusive and sustainable communities.
